"As Mayor of London, I am committed to fighting for lesbian and gay equality, challenging homophobia and celebrating the contribution of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to the rich and varied life of our capital.
Sexuality is an integral part of the Corporation’s equality and diversity strategy and our inclusive communities’ agenda. Ensuring equality is also a key part of our Involvement Policy and our developing Community Cohesion Policy.
Stonewall Housing provides a vital service assisting and housing young people who become homeless because of homophobia in the family and who are in an extremely vulnerable position.
Making a real difference to the lives of London’s young people requires engagement and involvement with key stakeholders such as Stonewall Housing, who work directly with young lesbian and gay people, to press for change in policy development and service delivery for your communities.
I totally support the work of Stonewall Housing". Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London
“As the Chief Executive of the Housing Corporation, we believe this is a very helpful and constructive website for both mainstream and specialist housing providers as well as those seeking to offer the best services they can for their tenants and residents.
Sexuality is an integral part of the Corporation’s equality and diversity strategy and our inclusive communities’ agenda. Ensuring equality is also a key part of our Involvement Policy and our developing Community Cohesion Policy.
A major plank of the Corporation’s diversity strategy is to promote inclusive and sustainable communities. We want to make places that all people want to live in, that they can identify with, and that they can be proud of.
It is a challenge for all of us to make a difference by tackling disadvantage and exclusion. This website will be invaluable in providing ways of improving housing and services for gay, lesbian and bisexual persons – some of the very people liable to be excluded, or discriminated against or subjected to harassment.” John Rouse, Chief Executive, Housing Corporation
"Imaan is a social support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Muslims, their families, friends and supporters, and those questioning their sexuality or gender identity. Imaan recognises and fully supports the important role Stonewall Housing plays in supporting the LGBT communities." Imaan
“Stonewall Housing is a unique and exceptional resource by and for the lesbian gay bisexual and transgender community.
The organization has persistently supported the community despite facing a continually changing landscape in terms of heterosexism and homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, especially in relation to public policy.
Since the demise of the Greater London Council, when perhaps for the first time the evidence that exists regarding the needs of this community in terms of housing was properly recognised, we have seen a repeating pattern of denial, a gradual undermining of evidence that does exist and huge resistence to properly research the needs that exist. This situation has been exacerbated by the resistence to monitor and include sexuality in mainstream economic data collection.
The Greater London Authority’s Equalities Impact Assessment on the London Housing Strategy 2005 – 2016 clearly outlines how mainstream housing strategies do not meet the needs of this community and yet the final strategy fails entirely to address the issue. This is the extent of the barriers Stonewall Housing faces.
Safe accessible housing is probably the single most significant need for any marginalized group, specifically for LGBT people and perhaps more so for young LGBT people and it is vital that Stonewall Housing, an organization that has built its intelligence and experience in these issues since 1983, over a twenty year period, is sufficiently resourced and supported to be an independent voice for the community.” Jane Standing, Chief Executive Officer, Kairos in Soho
“Freestyle London supports the work of Stonewall Housing and is grateful on behalf of all young LGBT people in London that the services it is able to offer exist. It is a sad fact that coming out has gotten no easier for some young people and it is organisations such as Stonewall Housing who can offer a lifeline to those young people who become homeless after informing their families of their sexuality. Specialist Young People’s Housing Advice Staff ensure that Stonewall Housing are fully equipped to deal with the needs of this, too often vulnerable, section of our communities.” Samantha Goldberg, Manager, Freestyle London
“Shelter worked with Stonewall Housing on an innovative policy, training and development project on the housing needs of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals. Stonewall Housing are a proactive forward thinking organisation able to respond to a changing external landscape. Stonewall Housing are an excellent partner agency and approach joint working with clarity, commitment and enthusiasm. The staff are both knowledgeable and helpful. I hope that I have the opportunity to work with Stonewall Housing again.” Joanne Marks, National Development Manager, Shelter
“Stonewall Housing is a well respected and professional frontline organisation working with some of the most vulnerable people in the LGBT communities. The work Stonewall Housing does in addressing the housing needs of LGBT people is absolutely vital, and I am proud of the unique work Galop and Stonewall Housing do in partnership to support LGBT people who have been victims of hate crime in or around their homes.” Tor Docherty, Chief Executive, Galop
"As Co Chair of the LGBT Advisory Group to the Met police I am only too aware of the problems many LGBT people in London have which centre on where they live. In addition to costs of accommodation and the difficulties in finding it, LGBT people often face harassment and worse from neighbours and local youths, which can make their lives a daily misery. We are fortunate, therefore to have an organisation like Stonewall Housing in the capital to which LGBT people in trouble can turn. The impact of the work of their dedicated housing and advice teams cannot be overestimated. It's a much needed service which we warmly endorse" Bob Hodgson, Co-Chair, LGBT Advisory Group to the Metropolitan Police
"Stonewall Housing's advice service is a great resource for older lesbians, gay men and bisexuals; we have referred many callers to their service. We also work with Stonewall Housing on policy and strategy for future increased options in housing for older LGB people: something that is greatly needed in the UK." Lindsay River, Project Co-ordinator, Polari in Partnership
"Stonewall Housing is an established provider operating within a specialist field. They provide the only Supporting People (SP) service in Haringey targeting young gay men and lesbian women. A recent Service Review report received from the SP team (February 2006) confirmed that service users are happy with the support they receive and all feel safe in their accommodation." London Borough of Haringey Supporting People Team
"The main strength of Stonewall Housing's supported housing service is in providing a safe space for service users to work through issues about their sexuality. ... The service works well with young gay men and women who are coming out, with psychological problems and the ability and motivation to access services. ... Several service users had been street homeless and had been severely bullied in hostels. Service users described the service as a safe space where they could go forward with their lives." London Borough of Islington Supporting People Team
“The team were a pleasure to work with, and admirably dedicated to their cause. We wish them all the best for the future and hope to see them celebrating many more significant achievements.” Sarah Libretto, Heaven Nightclub
