What it’s like volunteering at Stonewall Housing:
Volunteers make a really important contribution to Stonewall Housing. We believe this way of working provides benefits both to the organisation and to volunteers.
Why volunteer for Stonewall Housing?
People volunteer to help us for lots of different reasons. Some of them include:
- Wanting to giving something back, either to the LGBT communities in general, or to Stonewall Housing because they have received our help
- Career development – we provide challenging and satisfying roles, support and supervision, training, a reference and travel expenses
- Wanting to get more involved in Stonewall Housing – volunteers are consulted on the future direction of the organisation
- Wanting to meet new people – volunteers work with staff members and other volunteers
What does Stonewall Housing get out of it?
Working with volunteers helps Stonewall Housing in lots of positive ways. It means we can:
- increase our resources
- improve the quality of service we provide
- broaden the diversity of our workforce
Stonewall Housing usually recruits volunteers to carry out a specific project or task, for example working with the advice team, carrying out marketing and PR projects, or administration. Stonewall Housing advertises these vacancies here on the website and potential volunteers complete an application form and attend an interview if short-listed.
Sometimes a person with specific skills approaches Stonewall Housing offering to be a volunteer. In these cases, we decide whether there is a role that the person could fill, and then invite the volunteer to fill in an application form and attend an interview. If successful, Stonewall Housing works with the volunteer to develop a task list which clearly defines the volunteer’s role and responsibilities.
